Accreditation Standards For Advanced Dental Education Programs in Dental Anesthesiology
Every patient deserves access to the dental care they need, but for some patients, receiving that care can be challenging. Dentist anesthesiologists help make treatment possible for patients who may otherwise struggle to access or tolerate dental care, including young children, older adults, patients with special needs, and those with complex medical or behavioral considerations.
As a dentist anesthesiologist, you’ll combine your dental expertise with advanced training in anesthesia and patient care. You’ll work alongside dentists and dental specialists to provide safe, comfortable care for patients who require additional support during treatment.
The path is challenging, but the opportunity is unique. After earning your dental degree and becoming licensed, you’ll complete three years of postdoctoral training in dental anesthesiology. Accredited residency programs are available at institutions throughout the United States and Canada.

ASDA now offers the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Comprehensive Basic Science Examination (CBSE) for Dental Anesthesiology residency training program applicants.
The NBME CBSE will be required for application to a majority of Dental Anesthesiology residency programs. It also provides applicants with a method to assess their understanding of basic sciences through an enhanced testing mechanism. Please review the CBSE requirements for each training program prior to submitting your application.
ASDA will offer the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Comprehensive Basic Science Examination (CBSE) during 2 testing windows: Feb. 1-14 and July 1-14 at Prometric Testing Centers. All candidates must register at least 90 days prior to the last test date. You may not transfer your examination registration to another testing window after the registration deadline passes.
After completing the examination, applicants will receive an electronic score report from NBME within 30 days after the close of the testing window. A copy of the score report will also be provided to the dental anesthesiology training program(s) designated on the Dental Anesthesiology Candidate Examination Registration Score Release Form.
The NBME CBSE is open to dental students and dentists interested in applying to advanced dental education residency programs.
A $150 cancellation fee applies once a scheduling permit has been ordered. Cancellations and refunds are not permitted after the registration deadline has passed.
