What is a Dentist Anesthesiologist?

Dentist anesthesiologists are licensed dentists with advanced training in sedation and anesthesiology. They have the expertise and experience to evaluate each patient, determine the appropriate level of sedation or anesthesia, and safely manage the entire process from preparation through recovery.

Dentist anesthesiologists:

  • Complete a full-time, accredited three-year residency in dental anesthesiology after dental school.
  • Receive extensive training in sedation and anesthesia, including the safe care and monitoring of patients throughout treatment.
  • Complete clinical training in hospital operating rooms and ambulatory settings, including anesthesia care for dental patients.
  • May receive additional training in areas such as emergency medicine, internal medicine, cardiology, and acute and chronic pain management.
  • Many are board-certified by the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology (ADBA), which requires completion of an accredited residency, at least 12 months of anesthesia practice, and successful completion of a rigorous examination process.
  • Participate in continuing education to stay current with advances in dental anesthesiology, sedation, anesthesia, and patient care.
